What Is Maro Waterfall?

Tucked beneath the protected bluffs of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, the Nerja waterfall at Maro pours mountain spring runoff straight down a sheer limestone face into the open sea. Drivers passing along the N-340 highway barely catch a glimpse because the stream tucks into a fold in the rock that opens only to the Mediterranean. It remains one of the few spots in southern Spain where fresh mountain water plunges directly into salt water.

Getting to the base means taking to the water. Launching a kayak or paddleboard from the coarse sand of Playa de Maro brings you out along the base of towering cliffs and small sea caves. You can paddle through quiet gullies, watch yellow-legged gulls wheeling above the bluffs, and pull close enough to feel the cold spray drifting off the cascade onto your skin.

The volume of water changes through the year. Heavy rains in late winter and snowmelt from the Sierra de Almijara send a strong plume crashing into the waves through May. By late summer, the stream usually narrows to a quiet shower, yet paddling the sheltered cove and looking up at the overhangs makes the short trip from Nerja worthwhile.

Paddling out from the shingle cove at 9:30 AM was smooth as glass. Standing under the cool spray in the middle of the sea felt incredible.

The water clarity around the bluffs was unreal. We saw schools of sea bream swimming four meters down through the posidonia grass.

The afternoon wind picked up on our return leg, which made paddling tough for the kids. Definitely stick to the morning if you can.

Rented a double kayak right off the sand with no fuss. The waterfall drop against the raw red rock looks even better than the pictures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about maro waterfall.

Viewing the falls costs nothing if you bring your own board or kayak. Renting gear on the beach costs around €20 for two hours.

No path leads down to the base from above. The cliffs drop vertically into deep water, so you must approach by sea.

Flow changes dramatically with regional rainfall. Late spring offers a strong cascade, while late August can reduce the stream to a light drip.

Rio Chillar is an inland river hike through shaded slot canyons, while this trip is an open-sea paddle along exposed coastal cliffs.

Booking ahead is wise during July and August when slots sell out by 10:00 AM. In May, June, or September, walking up usually works fine.

Most people take roughly 25 minutes of steady paddling each way, leaving an hour to swim, take photos, and drift near the rocks.

Rental stands provide sealed dry canisters, but double-bagging your phone inside a waterproof pouch is smart insurance against saltwater leaks.
